ウィリアム・ティンダル（約1490–1536）は、聖書をヘブライ語・ギリシャ語の原典から英語に訳し、すべての人が聖書に触れられるようにすることへ生涯を捧げました。彼の願いは、「鋤を引く少年」でさえ聖書を知ることでした。
働きへの反対のため、ティンダルはイングランドを離れざるを得ませんでした。主にドイツやネーデルラントを中心に大陸ヨーロッパ各地で翻訳を進めました。1535年には裏切られてアントワープ近郊で逮捕され、ブリュッセル近くのヴィルヴォールデ城に投獄されました。
1536年10月6日、そこで火刑に処せられる前に絞首されました。記録された最後の祈りは、「主よ、イングランド王の目を開いてください」でした。
1604年、イングランド王ジェームズ1世が新しい英語訳聖書を許可し、学者たちが欽定訳聖書となる翻訳を開始しました。1611年に完成し初版が出され、ティンダルの先行訳に大きく依拠しており、新約聖書の文言の多くが彼の仕事を反映しています。
彼の犠牲は神のことばを庶民の手に届ける助けとなり、今もなお世界中で英語聖書の読み方を形づくっています。

Your reading data (streaks, achievements, reading plans) is stored locally on your device using browser storage. Usage events are sent to our servers with a random device identifier so we can monitor reliability — these include which passage is playing, plus summary facts such as your streak counts, achievement unlocks and reading-plan activity.
We collect usage analytics (such as which features are used and how often) through Google Analytics, linked to a random device identifier. No personally identifiable information such as your name or email is included.
We never ask for your name or email, and there are no user accounts or logins. Like any website, our servers record technical details of each request — such as your IP address and browser — to keep the service secure and reliable.
Word meanings, verse meanings and transliterations are machine-generated and may differ from traditional Bible wording. Settings describes them as machine-generated where you turn them on, and each of them can be switched off there. None of them replaces the translation you selected.
Wireless projection pairs a screen and a phone using a short-lived pairing code or QR code. No account or sign-in is needed. Stopping the projection disconnects your devices, and the pairing session expires on its own.
