Cysegrodd William Tyndale (tua 1490-1536) ei fywyd i gyfieithu'r Beibl o'i destunau Hebraeg a Groeg gwreiddiol i'r Saesneg, wedi'i yrru gan angerdd i wneud yr Ysgrythur yn hygyrch i bawb. Ei weledigaeth oedd y byddai hyd yn oed "bachgen sy'n gyrru'r aradr" yn adnabod yr Ysgrythurau.
Oherwydd gwrthwynebiad i'w waith, gorfodwyd Tyndale i ffoi o Loegr. Gweithiodd ar draws tir mawr Ewrop, yn enwedig yn yr Almaen ac yn y Gwledydd Isel, i gwblhau ei gyfieithiad. Yn 1535 fe'i bradychwyd a'i arestio ger Antwerp, ac wedyn fe'i carcharwyd yng nghastell Vilvoorde ger Brwsel.
Ar 6 Hydref 1536, cafodd ei ddienyddio yno — ei dagu wrth y stanc ac wedyn ei losgi. Ei weddi olaf a gofnodwyd oedd, "Arglwydd, agor lygaid brenin Lloegr."
Yn 1604, awdurdododd Iago I, brenin Lloegr, gyfieithiad Saesneg newydd o'r Beibl, a dechreuodd tîm o ysgolheigion ar y gwaith a fyddai'n dod yn Fersiwn y Brenin Iago. Fe'i cwblhawyd a'i gyhoeddi gyntaf yn 1611, gan ddibynnu'n helaeth ar gyfieithiad cynharach Tyndale, gyda chanran uchel iawn o eiriad y Testament Newydd yn adleisio ei waith.
