كرّس ويليام تندل (حوالي 1490–1536) حياته لترجمة الكتاب المقدس من نصوصه العبرية واليونانية الأصلية إلى الإنجليزية، مدفوعًا بشغف أن يجعل الأسفار المقدسة في متناول الجميع. وكانت رؤيته أن يعرف الأسفار حتى «الفتى الذي يقود المحراث».
وبسبب المعارضة لعمله، اضطر تندل إلى الفرار من إنجلترا. وعمل في أرجاء أوروبا القارية، ولا سيما في ألمانيا والأراضي المنخفضة، لإكمال ترجمته. وفي عام 1535 تعرّض للخيانة وأُلقي القبض عليه قرب أنتويرب، ثم سُجن في قلعة فيلفورد قرب بروكسل.
وفي 6 أكتوبر 1536 أُعدم هناك، إذ خُنق على الوتد ثم أُحرق. وكانت آخر صلاة مسجَّلة له: «يا رب، افتح عيني ملك إنجلترا».
وفي عام 1604، أجاز الملك جيمس الأول ملك إنجلترا إعداد ترجمة إنجليزية جديدة للكتاب المقدس، وبدأ فريق من العلماء العمل الذي صار لاحقًا نسخة الملك جيمس. واكتملت الترجمة ونُشرت لأول مرة عام 1611، مع اعتماد كبير على ترجمة تندل السابقة، حتى إن نسبة عالية جدًا من صياغات العهد الجديد فيها تعكس عمله.

Word meanings, verse meanings and transliterations are machine-generated and may differ from traditional Bible wording. Settings describes them as machine-generated where you turn them on, and each of them can be switched off there. None of them replaces the translation you selected.
Wireless projection pairs a screen and a phone using a short-lived pairing code or QR code. No account or sign-in is needed. Stopping the projection disconnects your devices, and the pairing session expires on its own.
