What was happening when Jesus and the disciples were caught in the storm?

Jesus had told His disciples to cross to the other side of the lake, so they got into a small boat with Him. While they were sailing, a sudden and very strong storm hit. The wind whipped up huge waves so high that the boat was being covered and seemed close to sinking. Some of the disciples were used to the sea, but even they were terrified. During all this, Jesus was in the back of the boat, asleep, showing both His true humanity and His calm trust in His Father.

Why was Jesus asleep during such a dangerous storm?

Jesus was truly human, so after a long day of ministry He was tired and fell into a deep sleep. His sleep was not careless or uncaring. It showed that He had a real human body that needed rest, and also that His heart was at peace, trusting His Father. His sleeping at that moment also tested the disciples’ faith. They had to decide if they would trust Him when He seemed inactive. He did not sleep because He was powerless, but to bring their weak faith into the open and then strengthen it.
