Why did Solomon build the temple on Mount Moriah in Jerusalem?

Solomon did not just pick any spot for the temple. The place was already chosen by God. Mount Moriah in Jerusalem was where God had appeared to David and answered him by fire at the threshingfloor of Ornan the Jebusite, when a sacrifice stopped a judgment on the people. That spot became a place of atonement and mercy. Building the temple there showed that worship, sacrifice, and meeting with God would continue in the same place where God had already shown his grace to Israel.

What is the threshingfloor of Ornan the Jebusite mentioned in this passage?

A threshingfloor was an open, hard surface where grain was separated from the husks. Ornan the Jebusite owned such a place on Mount Moriah. David bought this threshingfloor to build an altar to the Lord when a plague was stopped. God answered David there, which marked the place as holy ground. Later, Solomon used this same threshingfloor as the foundation site for the temple, so the place of former sacrifice and mercy became the center of Israel’s regular worship.

When did Solomon begin to build the house of the Lord?

Solomon began building the temple on the second day of the second month, in the fourth year of his reign. The passage hints that the first years of his rule were not wasted but used for gathering workers, preparing materials, and arranging everything needed. Some have thought this timing may have lined up with a year of rest for the land, when people were more free to help, but the main point is that the work began in an ordered, prepared way, not in haste.

What is the meaning of calling the temple “the house of the LORD”?

Calling the building “the house of the LORD” shows that this was not just a grand public hall or royal project. It was the place where God chose to put his name and where Israel would meet with him through sacrifices, prayer, and offerings. Of course, God is not limited to a building, but this house was a visible sign of his presence among his people. It reminded Israel that God lived in their midst and that worship of him was at the center of their national life.

How does the link with Abraham and Isaac help us understand this place?

Mount Moriah is widely understood to be the same region where Abraham was told to offer Isaac and where God provided a ram instead. That earlier event showed God’s testing of faith and his grace in providing a substitute sacrifice. Building the temple on the same mountain ties these stories together. The place where God provided a substitute in Abraham’s day later became the place where sacrifices were offered again and again, pointing to God’s ongoing way of dealing with sin and showing mercy.

Why is it important that David had already prepared this place for the temple?

The passage stresses that Solomon built on the place David had prepared. David had not only bought the threshingfloor with his own money, but had chosen it by God’s direction. This shows a careful passing on of God’s plan from one generation to the next. Solomon does not change the site or look for what might seem more convenient. He accepts what God had already shown to David. It is a picture of faithfulness: the son continues the work the father began, following God’s revealed will.

What does this passage show about God’s presence and meeting with his people?

The passage ties God’s presence to a specific place and history. God had appeared to David there and answered by fire, and now the temple is built on that same ground. It shows that God chooses where and how he will be met, and that he often returns to places where he has shown mercy before. The temple did not make God near; rather, it marked the nearness he had already shown. It became a steady reminder that God comes close to his people in mercy and atonement.

How can this passage about the temple’s beginning speak to believers today?

While this verse reports a historical event, it also gives patterns that still help. First, it shows the value of obedience: Solomon builds where and when God directs, not where he pleases. Second, it highlights how God uses prepared places and prepared hearts; years of planning were not wasted. Third, it reminds believers that meeting with God is not casual. The temple rose on ground marked by sacrifice and mercy, pointing to how serious sin is and how kind God is to provide a way to come near.
