This book was breathed forth after the fall of Jerusalem and the desolation of Zion, when the people suffered famine, sword, and captivity because of manifold transgressions. It joineth deep grief, confession of sin, and the declaration that the Lord is righteous, yet full of tender mercies. Believers learn to mourn for iniquity, to bow under the yoke of chastening, and to hope still in the Lord whose compassions fail not.
